*SMITH & WESSON FIRST MODEL HAND EJECTOR TRIPLE LOCK DA REVOLVER. SN 2703. Cal. appears to be 450 or 455. A 450 Eley and 455 MKII Cartridge will chamber while neither the 45 S&W nor 45 Colt will chamber. Blue finish with 6-1/2″ bbl, integral half moon front sight and 2-line bbl address with patent dates. Lower left side of the bbl, frame and cylinder have tiny British proofs. Crane and ejector rod housing incorporate the triple lock feature which provides the third locking surface found only on these early Smith & Wesson revolvers. Later hand ejector models did not have this feature. It is mounted with deep gold S&W medallion diamond checkered walnut grips that are unnumbered but fit as original. Buttstrap has a factory lanyard swivel. Left rear side of the frame has the hand scratched combined initials “MB”. According to FLAYDERMIN’S GUIDE TO ANTIQUE AMERICAN FIREARMS, and other publications, only about 15,375 of these revolvers were produced in the period 1908-15. In this period prior to and during WWI a very high percentage of these revolvers were provided to the British government and saw hard service during the war. PROVENANCE: John Irwin Estate Collection. CONDITION: Very good. Overall retains 90-92% original blue with numerous small nicks and scratches, slight muzzle and sharp edge wear. Grips are very fine showing little or no wear with a few chipped diamonds on the right side and are probably period of use replacements. Hammer spring has been lightened, otherwise mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore with some very minor frosting near the muzzle. 4-36806 JR178 (3,000-5,000)
