*SCARCE HOLLENBECK GUN COMPANY, WHEELING, W. VA., SHOTGUN. SN 50. Cal. 12 Ga. 3″ Chambers. Best known for his three barrel guns, F. A. Hollenbeck, a prolific inventor, worked for, and formed many gun companies during his career. This unusual gun made in Wheeling, WV (before the name change to Three Barrel Gun Company, and moving to Moundsville), has 30-5/8″ fine Damascus bbls with flat file cut rib. Patented crossbolted rib extension is engraved “Damascus Steel”. Bbl flats are stamped with SN. Breech ends of bbls have scroll engraving. Boxlock action has fluted fences and automatic safety (“Safe” engraved). Water table is stamped with patent information, SN, and “C”. Action is engraved with very nicely cut light scroll at about 60% coverage framing bird dogs in ovals on either side. Bottom of action is engraved “Hollenbeck Gun Co Wheeling. W. Va.” Blued trigger guard has scroll engraving and quail on bow, and SN on tang. Dark, very finely marbled European walnut pistol grip buttstock measures 14-7/16″ over brown “Old English” pad installed on original Silvers base plate. Point pattern borderless checkering has scrolled rear portion extending onto buttstock. Scrolled pistol grip has ebony insert. Matching splinter forend has ebony tip, and inverted T-latch as found only on early Hollenbeck guns. Bore diameter: left -.733, right -.737. Bore restrictions: left -.032, right -.032. Wall thickness: left -.033, right -.027. Drop at heel: 3-3/8″, drop at comb: 2″. Weight: 8 lbs. 2.5 oz, LOP 14-7/16″. CONDITION: Fine. Bbls retain 40-50% original brown, pattern quite bold. Action retains most of its original case color, silvering on bottom, fences, and high edges (it was never very strong). Stocks retain most of their original rubbed oil finish, but with evidence of having been taken down a bit at time of fitting of new recoil pad. Action is tight. Bbls are very slightly off face.
