WONDERFUL CARVED WOOD BLACK AUTOMATON. This circa 1930’s electrified folk art automaton is a diorama featuring several black characters, some playing music and dancing, a man feeding chickens, a mammy spanking her bare-bottomed child as well as Amos and Andy in their taxi and a primitive looking Mickey Mouse. There is also a billboard with rolling linen banner reading “Have You Lost Your Dog?” This is all against a hand painted background of a country house with tree and barrel. SIZE: 28 ¼” l. x 18 ½” h. x 14 ½” d. CONDITION: Characters have some cracks and paint chipping, background has significant paint foxing and flaking, case finish is somewhat alligatored, but a very charming piece. 1-1610 (5,000-7,000) Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Fall 2003 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
