MODERN COPY OF A NELSON KING IMPROVED HENRY RIFLE. Cal. 44 CF. SN 1. Very unusual rifle with 20″ oct bbl, full magazine, Winchester style dovetail front sight and Spencer style carbine ladder rear sight with exposed tension spring. It has a silver-plated brass frame, forend cap and buttplate with uncheckered walnut stock & forearm with straight grip & crescent buttplate with trap. The receiver is nearly identical to a Model 66 with a King’s Patent style loading gate and a deeper radius cut on the bottom in front of the carrier opening. The front band is heavy machined steel similar to a Henry. The forend cap is nearly squared with slightly radiused front edge and the buttplate is almost identical to a Henry. It has a Model 66 sized straight lever with a large butterfly latch. The top of the receiver and top flat of the bbl are stamped “NK” and the serial number appears on about every part visible. The hammer is high spurred like a Model 66 and it has a Model 66 style bolt & carrier with top extractor. It appears that it may have been originally designed as either a rim fire or center fire. It is unknown what the actual caliber is but a 44-40 will not function in the action. Neither will a 44 American but it is center fire. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbl, magazine tube, lever, sights and front band are still in the white with good polish. Receiver, buttplate and forend cap are silver-plated and retain virtually all of this fine plating. Mechanics are dry but function well, bright shiny bore. From the collection of the late Bruce McDowell. 4-54606 JR716 (2,000-3,000)
