EDMUND WILLIAM GREACEN (American, 1877-1949) “AN OLD-FASHION GOWN”. Outstanding oil on canvas scene shows three quarter length figure of a young girl seated to half right wearing lavender and pale green gown holding a blue feather fan. Light celadon background. Signed “Edmund Greacen” and dated “1920”. “Copyright 1922 by S.T. Shaw”. The frame has several labels. Stretcher and canvas is marked “Samuel T. Shaw” in several places. Housed in a period carved and gilt frame. Accompanying lot are seven fine color reproduction prints of the painting (These were done by S.T. Shaw when he copyrighted the painting). PROVENANCE: Samuel T. Shaw purchased prize, Salmagundi Club, New York, 1921. Parke-Bernet Galleries Inc., Sale No. 709 Lot No. 111 from the collection of the Late Samuel T. Shaw, New York. November 21st, 1945. Catalog of this sale accompanies the lot. An invoice from the International Studio Art Division of the Hearst Cooperation selling this painting accompanies lot. Painting is mentioned in the Cummer Gallery of Art catalog of Edmund W. Greacen. On page 14, mentioning that this was awarded the Shaw purchase price prize of $1,000 at the Salmagundi Club.
