IMPORTANT FISCHER & MIEG GILT DECORATED FISH SET. Late 19th/early 20th Century. Czechoslovakian. This large 14-piece fish service consisting of a large serving platter, gravy boat with attached underplate, footed round serving bowl with lid and eleven plates. All in light to dark underglaze blue and elaborately gilt decorated, each with a unique pond scene with varied types of fish swimming amongst aquatic plants, all within a gilt border of scrolling waves. The base of each item is marked with the Pirkenhammer Trademark in underglaze green used by the Fischer & Mieg Company, between 1873-1918. Some with additional; impressed mark “F&M24″. LITERATURE: The Pirkenhammer Manufacturing is still in existence today in the Czech Republic. In 1852, Christian Fischer purchased the company from one of the founders Christopher Reichenbach and brought in his daughter’s husband, Ludwig Von Mieg as his partner and renaming the company Fischer & Mieg. The Pirkenhammer Hallmark Design of unadorned crown, crossed hammers and ribbon was used 1873-1918. Andre’ Carriere was the sole designer and painter during this period. His work, together with the porcelain design were considered equal or superior to the contemporary Sevres and Limoges pieces. SIZE: Platter: 26 ” l; Gravy 10-1/4″ l x 5-1/2″ w. Bowl 8″ h with lid; Plates are 9-1/2″ dia. PROVENANCE: Owned by Senator P.L. Flanagan and used at a State dinner for Teddy Roosevelt in Reno, Nevada, 1911 and so reported in the Reno Gazette issue of April 4th, 1911. CONDITION: Very good near excellent condition.
