SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1855 RIFLED MUSKET. Cal. 58. NSN. 40” part oct bbl. Marked with a large eagle on Maynard primer cover, “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD” at front of lockplate, “1860” at rear. There is no date on bbl, and inspector marks are only partially readable. There is no cartouche on left flat of stock, but large initials “E L.” have been carved in their place. This musket has standard two-leaf rear sight and an iron patchbox. About 50,000 of these were made at Springfield Armory. CONDITION: All parts have been lightly cleaned with light pitting remaining on bbl, heavier on the lock. Stock has been repaired, refinished, and new cracks have formed on both ends of lock and at buttplate. Mechanically good. Edwards Collection 4-58446 (2,000-3,000)
