SCARCE VERY EARLY WINCHESTER MODEL 1886 EXPRESS RIFLE. Cal. 50 EX. SN 28970. Standard grade rifle with 26” round bbl, standard front sight with screw and replacement 4-leaf platinum line express sight graduated from 100 to 500 yards. It has small British proofs on the left side of the bbl. It has a case colored receiver, uncheckered wood with straight stock & smooth steel buttplate. There is British style sling eyes on the bottom of the bbl and at the toe of the stock. Accompanied by an English canvas & leather case with blue felt lining with positions for the rifle and a modern jointed enameled steel & brass wiping rod. Also accompanies is a box of 50-110-300 Winchester ammunition in a 2-pc box with orange label. The case has a made-up label in the lid with Winchester Repeating Arms Company information. The top of the case has a painted panel “J.A. PANE”. Also accompanies is a Winchester Gun Museum letter identifying this rifle as having been shipped Feb. 19, 1889. Also accompanies is the reprint of a 10-page article from the The Winchester Collector magazine, Summer 1996 describing how the author had acquired and subsequently had the rifle restored. Is accompanied by a Cody letter. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbl retains about 98% fine restored blue. Receiver, lever, hammer, forend cap & buttplate retain most of their fine restored case colors. Wood is sound with most of its fine oil restored finish. Bright shiny bore with minor light pitting. Case is soiled with a broken corner and moderate to heavy wear and retains most of its bright relined finish. Hasp is missing from the lock. 4-50509 JR1143 (7,500-12,500)
