GROUP OF CARVED BLACK FOREST ANIMALS. 1st half 20th century. The first, a carving of bellowing elk with glass eyes, standing on a realistic grass and rock-strewn plinth fitted to a rectangular stand marked “Const. Boich / Elterlein”; interior of base in pencil script inscribed “Karl Raulz / 7 Juli 1922. / Elberlein Sachsen / Erzgebirge / N. 1200”. The second, a carving of a fox seated on tree trunk base, carved from the solid, stamped on underside within an incised cartouche “Paul Krieb” (the rest indecipherable). The third, a Black Forest nutcracker in the form of a seated squirrel with glass eyes and eating a nut, the hinged tail forming the lever for the nutcracker. The last, a recumbent long-haired dog with glass eyes. SIZE: ELK: 16″ overall h. x 19″ overall l. x 4-1/2″ w. FOX: 15″ h. x 9″ d. x 6-1/4″ w. SQUIRREL: 9″ h. x 10-1/2″ l. x 3″ w. DOG: 3″ h. x 11-1/2″ l. x 4-1/4″ w. PROVENANCE: From and East Sangerville, Maine private collection. Collected during travels in Germany. CONDITION: Elk with repair to left rear leg at hoof, antlers with some missing points, retains original surfaces. Fox is very good overall with original surfaces, good color and patina. Squirrel is very good overall. Rear legs of dog absent. 9-94967 (800-1,200)
