IMPORTANT HERTER BROTHERS AESTHETIC MARQUETRY DRESSING TABLE AND MIRROR. Circa 1880. This documented example is of ebonized cherry, made on a Vanderbilt commission and branded in block letters on the mirror backboard “HERTER BROS”, further inscribed in pencil beneath marble “N 411 Vanderbilt Esq.”, also “Vanderbilt” is seen on board behind the mirror. The rectangular beveled mirrorplate within a molded gilt surround, the frieze and mirror supports composed of marquetry stylized floral branches, chrysanthemum flowerheads, and budding sprigs in the Anglo-Japanese asymmetrical style, fitted to the case and flanked by banks of two short drawers, over two aligned drawers, raised on square molded legs, centering a drop pendant finial. All with molded white marble tops. Literature: Herter Brothers, Furniture and Interiors for a Gilded Age by Katherine S. Howe et al. A closely related example is the Lillian Russell wardrobe, which is part of the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. It should also be noted that the only known commission for the Vanderbilts executed by the Herter Brothers was that for William K. Vanderbilt’s mansion on Fifth Avenue, New York.
