DELUXE SPECIAL ORDER ENGRAVED WINCHESTER MODEL 1886 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. SN 99580. Spectacular exhibition quality rifle with 26″ oct to rnd bbl, ivory bead hunting front sight, slot blank in the rear seat and a Lyman tang sight. It has 2/3 magazine with spectacular, center crotch-cut, sunburst, flame grain, 4X walnut, buttstock & forearm with “H” style checkering and pistol grip stock with black wedge insert and Winchester embossed, hard rubber, shotgun buttplate. The receiver is engraved with about $5.00 engraving which consists of about 80% coverage foliate arabesque patterns on the left side surrounding the vignette of a large panel inlaid with gold lettering in period script “Winchester / Repeating Arms Co. / 1895”, all surrounded with gold wire inlay. The right side has a vignette of a bugling bull elk with light flourishes of arabesque patterns and a nice wavelet border. The bottom of the receiver has a large flourish and a small one top of the receiver and another behind the hammer. The bottom of the stock has a large gold initial plate inscribed with the intertwined initials “WRACO”. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter fully identifying this rifle with a flat top sporting rear sight and no mention of the tang sight. It shows that it was shipped May 23, 1895 to Order 11542. Returned & repaired January 6, 1899. The letter states that it had $5.00 engraving and that “Winchester Repeating Arms Co., 1895-iinlaid in gold”. CONDITION: Very fine, as completely and professionally restored to near factory orig specifications with brilliant case colors on the lever & hammer.
