BALLARD SPORTING RIFLE. Cal. 44 RF/44 Perc. SN 18331. Standard rifle with 28” oct bbl, globe front sight and standard Ballard ladder rear sight. Mounted with nicely figured, shell grain, uncheckered American walnut with straight stock & crescent steel buttplate. Receiver has Merrimack Arms marking. Top flat is marked “NO 44”. Top rear of receiver has been lightly filed in 1” x 1/2” area, no apparent reason. Hammer is patented dual ignition for both rimfire & percussion. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Bbl retains about 95% slightly thinned orig blue with a few scattered spots of light rust. Receiver retains 60-70% faded case colors with balance turned silver and a few spots of light rust. Stock has a crack in wrist and forearm is missing a sliver on left front edge with a small crack on right edge, otherwise wood is sound and retains about 90% strong orig varnish with usual handling & use marks. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore with some light pitting in front of chamber area. 4-30042 JR29 (2,000-3,000)
