SCARCE WINCHESTER DELUXE MODEL 1873 RIFLE.

SCARCE WINCHESTER DELUXE MODEL 1873 RIFLE. Cal 44WCF (44-40). SN 70938. Scarce special order 2nd model rifle with 24-1/4” oct bbl, button magazine with 2 to 3-x wood having early style checkered forearm and straight stock with crescent steel buttplate with trap. The bbl has half-nickel front sight and early style, short, semi-buckhorn rear sight with checkered edges, missing the elevator. It has case colored receiver, lever, hammer, forend cap, and buttplate. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter identifying this rifle and indicating shipment April 18, 1881. The letter states that it had a checkered stock with pistol grip. The rifle has a checkered straight stock, which appears correct in all respects and matches the forearm for condition and color. This likely is a mistake in the records. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Bbl retains about 95% strong original blue with edge wear and some thinning on the top flats. Receiver retains about all of its original case colors, but is faded, brilliant and strong in sheltered areas. Lever retains about 50% faded case colors and the hammer about 90%. Forend cap retains about 60% faded strong case colors and the buttplate about 95% slightly muted case colors. Wood is sound and retains most of a fine professionally restored finish and freshened checkering with minor handling and storage marks. Brilliant shiny bore. This rifle has seen very little use, but appears to have been stored near fluorescent lights for a long time without care. 4-51490 JR879 (12,500-17,500)
