*OUTSTANDING LC SMITH PIGEON GRADE SIDE BY SIDE SHOTGUN. SN 5002. Cal. 12ga, 30″ bbls, checkered, tapered, concave rib with dual ivory sighting beads, FULL/FULL choke, 2-3/4″ chambers, ejectors and dbl triggers. Top rib is marked “HUNTER ARMS CO. MAKERS FULTON N.Y.” Precious metal strip and rib extension engraved with pigeon. The regular frame is engraved on left plate with standing pigeon and tight decorative foliate arabesque scrolls, right plate with pigeon in flight, matching scrolls, and both plates marked “L.C. SMITH”. Sides and bottom have decorative foliate scrolls and trigger guard is engraved “C.H.L.” Mounted with nicely figured dark walnut, checkered pistol grip with hard rubber grip cap, Monte Carlo and leather-faced solid recoil pad. Fully checkered splinter forend with ebony tip insert. Bore diameter: left -.726, right -.724. Bore restrictions: left -.040, right -.025. Wall thickness: left -.029, right -.039. Drop at heel:2-1/2″ , drop at comb:2″ . Weight: 7lbs. 11oz. LOP 13″. Accompanying gun is an LC Smith Collectors Association letter identifying as Pigeon Grade with 30″ bbls and finished February 5, 1901 also giving history of the Pigeon Grade. Also accompanying, a Cody Firearm Museum Marlin letter identifying gun as found. There is also a letter from Lloyd Greenup, Jr. stating that to the best of his ability gun was originally purchased by Charles H. Loud in the early 1900s. He was a lawyer and judge in Miles City, Montana. On his death the gun was passed to adopted daughter Margaret Lloyd Stanley who was married to Lowell E. Stanley. They moved to Hamilton in 1936 and purchased the Hamilton Floral. On their deaths the gun was passed to their son Charles R. Stanley. I purchased the gun from Charles Stanley in the 1990s. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbls retain 98% orig blue with a couple minor nicks & dings and faint rub mark from forend. Receiver retains 90+% strong, dark orig case colors on plates, thinning and blending with silver patina across bottom. Stock is sound with sharp, crisp checkering, a couple tiny dings in top of comb, some minor chipping on left side at recoil pad and retains orig finish. Pad is showing some age crack on sides, but is solid. Forend is sound with sharp checkering, a couple minor impressions and retains most of its orig finish. Mechanics are crisp, automatic safety, strong ejectors and nice shiny bores, as gun has seen very little use. 4-40077 BDT79 (6,000-8,000)
