DIXON & SONS SHEFFIELD DECANTER STAND AND ELDER & CO. EWER. 2nd half 19th century. The Dixon Sheffield decanter stand fitted with three cut-glass matching decanters with stoppers, the stand with gadrooned scrolling edges, reticulated shaped sides and scrolled outswept feet, the ring handle cast with leaftips. Signed in two places beneath the base, the first an applied cartouche with opposing lions and stamped “JAMES DIXON & SONS SHEFFIELD”, the second a stamp “D*S” above the numeral 159. The ewer with flaring base and etched and frosted scrolling anthemion and tassel decorations, mounted with a silvered handle, collar and spout, having a domed hinged lid engraved with a dragon. Collar marked with hallmarks of Elder & Co., the date mark ca. 1859-1860. SIZE: First: 18-1/2″ h. Second: 11″ h. PROVENANCE: From an East Sangerville, Maine private collection, by descent from Dr. Samuel Cox Hooker (1864, Brenchley England -1935, Brooklyn Heights, New York), a sugar chemist, magician, and art collector, to the present owner, his great-grand-daughter. CONDITION: Decanter set in very good condition with no noted defects. Ewer with moderate foxing to glass, otherwise very good. 9-94960 (800-1,000)
