SCARCE REMINGTON KEENE SPORTING RIFLE. SN NSN. Cal. 45-70. Scarce sporting rifle with 24″ rnd bbl, dovetail front sight mounted on front bbl band. It has 1,000 yard Remington ladder rear sight with bright polished bolt & bolt knob & case colored hammer. Usual Remington address & patent markings are on bolt not on left side of receiver as usual. Mounted in 1-pc walnut half stock with case colored middle band that has sling loop with corresponding loop in buttstock. It has blued steel trigger guard with a bright metal carrier. Only about 5,000 of these scarce rifles were made in period 1880-1883 in five different types, but approximately 4,000 were hunters’ rifles & carbines. PROVENANCE: Dr. Frank Miller Estate Collection. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbl, magazine tube & front band retain 96-97% strong orig factory blue with a couple of light spots & a scratch or two in magazine tube. Receiver retains about 95% fading orig blue, slightly thinned over top. Hammer retains bright case colors on right side with balance fading to silver with spots of colour. Buttplate retains about 75% faded case colors, strong on tang and trigger guard retains about 90% strong orig blue. Forend cap retains most of its orig, moderately faded, case colors. Wood is sound with minor handling & use marks and retains most of its fine oil finish. Mechanics are crisp, very bright shiny bore. 4-35656 JR422 (3,000-4,000)
