ENGRAVED MODEL 1860 HENRY LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 44 RF Henry. SN 1225. Usual configuration with 24-1/4″ oct bbl with integral magazine, German silver front sight and fixed rear sight in the rear seat with a seat cut into the top of the receiver. It has beautifully grained rosewood stock with 1st type buttplate with rounded heel & trap. The receiver has full coverage Samuel J. Hoggson engraving with about 85% coverage fine foliate arabesque patterns with four blossoms and leaves at the bottom center of both sideplates. It has Hoggson’s trademark wavy border patterns with arabesque pattern on the raised areas in front of the sideplates. The engraving extends over the top three flats, around the hammer, on the top tang and buttplate tang. The carrier is inscribed, in beautiful period engraving, “A.C. Osborn.” The main engraving pattern is identical to serial number 1570 as pictured on page 26 of the book Winchester Engraving, Wilson, which also has a rosewood stock. All matching including all of the screws with the serial number appearing on the left side of the lower tang under the wood, in the top tang channel of the buttstock and inside the tang of the buttplate. The follower tab is missing and replaced with a knurled screw and the pivot screw at the muzzle is also missing and replaced with a knurled screw. A very unusual feature of this rifle is the right hand mounted sling swivel base, low in the buttstock. The swivel is broken away leaving only the base and the sling loop is missing from the bbl gullet. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbl retains 88-90% orig blue, strong in the gullets, thinning on the sharp edges and turning plum on the bottom of the magazine tube, being a light silver/gray patina back near the receiver. Bbl markings are sharp. Receiver retains 65-70% orig silver-plating, strong in the sheltered areas, thinning on the sides, bottom and tang. Buttstock has a couple of grain checks by the swivel base with minor nicks & scratches and a gouge by the buttplate and another on the right wrist. Lever and hammer are mostly a silver/gray patina. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore with scattered light pitting. 4-54529 JR122 (50,000-100,000)
