IDENTIFIED MARTIAL HENRY RIFLE.

IDENTIFIED MARTIAL HENRY RIFLE. Cal 44RF Henry. SN 8768. Typical late Henry with 24-1/4” oct bbl with integral magazine tube. It has straight grain walnut stock with straight grip and brass crescent buttplate that contains a 4-pc brass and iron wiping rod in the trap. The left side of the wrist has the tiny inspector initials “J.T.” and the lower tang has an “H” inspector mark. The left sides of the bbl assembly and buttstock have factory sling swivels with a good “Henry Bump” below the buttstock swivel. The bbl has a homemade higher brass front sight blade and Henry ladder rear sight. It is accompanied by a letter dated September 5, 1997 from the Springfield Research Service over the signature of Franklin B. Mallory. It states that the records of the Army Adjutant Generals office show that this exact rifle was used in Company I, 3rd U.S. Veteran Voluntary Infantry during the Civil war and that it was issued to Pvt. Andrew Weyland about May 13, 1865. It identifies Pvt. Weyland as being born in Bavaria Germany and enlisting at age 33. He served initially with Company A, 2nd Independent Pennsylvania artillery before joining the 3rd Veteran Volunteer Infantry on March 22, 1865 at Philadelphia. He was discharged at Springfield, IL March 21,1866.

Additional information regarding this rifle was also found in the Company and Regimental books of the 3rd U.S. Veterans Volunteer Infantry in the National Archives under record group 94, entry 112. These rifles were issued to the individual solider with the provision that they could retain them without cost upon discharge if they kept them in good order. It is assumed that this rifle was taken home to Philadelphia by Pvt. Weyland. Also accompanying are 5 pages of Pvt. Weyland’s military record. Also included is a copy of page 1718 of Dyer’s Compendium of the War of the Rebellion which is the record of service of the Veteran Volunteers.

CONDITION: Extremely fine. All matching with the serial number stamped on the left side of the lower tang, inside the top tang channel of the buttstock and inside the toe of the buttplate. Bbl assembly retains 75-80% original blue with light surface discoloration, strong and bright in the sheltered areas. Receiver has fine sharp edges with a beautiful dark mustard patina. There is a fine scratch on the right sideplate. Magazine follower and spring are original. Buttstock retains a fine dark finish with a few minor scratches, three or four small bruises and a scrape .
