*RARE WINCHESTER MODEL 1897 MILITARY TRENCH GUN. SN 949639. Cal. 12 ga. Blue finish with 20-1/2″ cylinder choke bbl with 4-line perforated steel handguard & bayonet lug with sling loop & corresponding loop in buttstock containing a canvas “Nobukl” sling. Top of bbl, over chamber, has Ordnance Corps flaming bomb & left rear side of receiver a large “U.S.” & Ordnance Corps flaming bomb. Shotgun was originally built as a takedown model but when factory made it as a trench gun they turned it into a solid frame model. Mounted with uncheckered American walnut with rnd ribbed forearm & semi-pistol grip stock with Winchester embossed hard rubber buttplate. Left side of buttstock has “W.B.” inspector initials in a rectangle cartouche over a tiny ordnance wheel. Accompanied by an orig Winchester “1917” dated bayonet with 16-3/4″ blade & wood handles. Which has its orig green leather scabbard with steel throat & tip. CONDITION: Very good to fine. Overall retains 85-90% orig factory blue with fine surface rust & wear on magazine tube. Receiver retains about 90% strong orig blue with scattered fine pin prick pitting. Forearm is sound & may be an old replacement. Buttstock has two or three grain checks & retains most of its orig oil finish. Mechanics are crisp, dark bore with moderate pitting. 4-35066 JR416 (3,000-5,000)
