JAMES EARLE FRASER (AMERICAN, 1876-1953), “END OF THE TRAIL”. Circa 1913. This small version that we are attributing to the artist is unsigned and undated. It appears, possibly, that it may have been cast as a model for the marble statue by the artist exhibited at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915, San Francisco, California. It should be noted that this version is modeled without the medicine bag on the man’s right hip, with small tree under hind legs of horse and wire reins. This model is on an unusual rectangular base. Its diminutive size would suggest the possibility that it was used as a sample for his later and larger castings, or even perhaps the sample for the monumental statue of the same subject on display at the exposition. SIZE: H. of statue 13″. Overall h. 14″. L. of statue 10-1/4″. CONDITION: Nice medium brown patina with green cast. Overall very good condition. The rectangular rocky bronze base with good detailing. The black marble plinth also fine. 9-94507 (2,500-3,500)
