VERY RARE C.B. HOLDEN 1ST MODEL OPEN SIDE SINGLE SHOT RIFLE. Cal. 44 RF Long. SN 18. Referred to as “Holden’s Patent 1862 Rifle”, it has a 24” oct bbl, fixed dovetail front sight and Holden’s short ladder 2-position rear sight. The top flat between the frame and rear sight is marked “C.B. HOLDEN’S PATENT / APRIL 1862”. The bore has five wide lands with narrow grooves, conventional rifling, and left hand twist. It has a silver plated bronze receiver and lever with a silver plated bronze crescent buttplate with faceted tang. The wood is very nicely grained uncheckered American walnut with splinter forearm and straight stock. There is a small rectangular plate tacked to the bottom of the stock with the number “295”. This unusual rifle is made with the entire right side of the receiver open exposing two finger loops, which are actually the striker and bolt. The striker can be operated at any time, however in order to open the bolt one must first open the lever which disengages the lock. Then the bolt can be retracted and the empty case extracted. When a fresh cartridge is inserted the bolt is manually pushed forward and the lever closed before the trigger will engage. No other safety is present. There is a sling loop attached to the front of the trigger guard. Accompanied by a copy of a brief biography of C.B. Holden. Ex-Eldon Owens Collection. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbl retains 97-98% strong orig blue turning plum. Receiver retains about 60% oxidized silver-plating and the lever and buttplate about 70%. Wood is sound with minor nicks and scratches and retains most of its bright orig varnish. Crisp mechanics, brilliant shiny bore with some light very fine pitting near the muzzle and a couple of spots down the bore. 4-55016 JR725 (4,000-7,000)
