SMITH & WESSON FRONTIER MODEL DA REVOLVER. SN 13812. Cal. 44 WCF. (44-40). Blue finish with 6″ keyhole shaped bbl, pinned half moon front sight and 2-line address with left side marked “44 WINCHESTER CTG”. Mounted with 2-pc rnd butt S&W embossed, diamond checkered, hard rubber grips numbered to this revolver. According to Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms Smith & Wesson records disclose that all frames for this revolver were manufactured prior to 1899 and therefore are considered to be antique under existing regulations. There were 15,340 of these fine large frame revolvers produced in their own serial range. This was a very popular revolver on the American frontier with numerous lawmen & outlaws recorded to have favored using it. Among them were Belle Starr & infamous Texas gunfighter, John Wesley Hardin, who was holding one of these nickel plated revolvers when he was killed in the Acme Saloon in El Paso, TX in Aug. 1895. CONDITION: Very fine plus, all matching including bbl latch, cyl & grips. Overall retains about 95-96% glossy orig blue with muzzle edge wear and some slight thinning on sides of bbl. Rear sides of frame are lightly flaked to light patina. Trigger retains 60-70% bright orig case colors and hammer about all of its orig case colors. Grips have a compression fracture on inside by the right escutcheon, otherwise are sound showing light wear. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore, may be unfired. 4-40255 JR154 (3,000-5,000)
