SHARPS CONVERTED PISTOL RIFLE. SN 868. Cal. .38. 35-3/8” rnd bbl. The patch box on this rifle is engraved “SPORTING RIFLE / -USED BY- / Edw. Kendell. Tyrone.N.Y. / COUSIN OF Lewis Sunderlin / With Gen. Sherman- / on his / March to the Sea”. The rifle has also been converted to fire a center fire shot with an extractor mounted on the right side of the action. Accompanying the gun is a large packet of material concerning Kendell’s service in the 107th New York Infantry from 1862 to the end of the war. He was wounded at Gettysburg but continued in service until June 5, 1865. The patch box and converted action are shown in Frank Sellers’ Sharps Firearms. CONDITION: Retains most of the varnish on the wood. Strong silver-plating on the patch box, buttplate and forearm tip. Strong traces of blue remain on the bbl, which is mostly turned to brown with scattered spots of pitting. Action has 40% fading case hardening colors. Action is fine.
