ATTRIBUTED TO ARTHUR FITZWILLIAM TAIT (American, 1819-1905) A CHECK-KEEP YOUR DISTANCE. Outstanding large oil on canvas western plains scene shows a frontiersman seated on his brown stallion amongst tall prairie grass. He aims his rifle at four oncoming Native Americans on horseback who are pointing their bows & arrows at him. His companion is on another horse fleeing with the two pack horses. An arrow has lodged itself in the saddle blanket. All under a blue & white cloud sky. Unsigned. Housed in a period gilt frame which may be a liner for a larger frame. On reverse of canvas is a “Williams, Stevens & Williams, New York” canvas stamp. SIZE: 30″ x 44″. CONDITION: One small circular patch to reverse, minor inpainting, very good. 9-25051 (7,500-12,500)
