SMITH & WESSON NO. 3 FIRST MODEL RUSSIAN. SN 27924. Cal. 44 Russian. Blue finish with 8″ keyhole shaped bbl, pinned half moon front sight and 1-line address in English which included “RUSSIAN MODEL”. It has usual 6-shot cyl and is mounted with smooth walnut grips numbered to this revolver. Butt strap has a screw-plugged lanyard stud hole. According to Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms about 4,665 of these commercial production revolvers were made. Like their predecessors, the No. 3 American models , they were immediately accepted by the American public and saw extensive service on the American frontier. They were greatly favored due to their ease of loading & unloading, powerful cartridge and inherent accuracy. There are numerous recorded instances of both lawmen & outlaws using these revolvers to great effect, including members of the James Gang, Buffalo Bill Cody, among other luminaries of that time. PROVENANCE: David Crocker Estate Collection. CONDITION: Very fine, all matching including bbl, cyl & grips. Grips are sound with moderate wear and retain a hand worn patina. Bbl latch is a little sticky, otherwise mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore. 4-36869 JR158 (4,000-6,000)
