ULTRA-RARE REMINGTON MODEL 1918 MARK I PEDERSEN DEVICE. SN 3828-1. Cal. 30. Extremely rare complete & orig Pedersen device made by Remington at their Bridgeport works with “EEC” inspector initials on rear edge of breech block. Accompanied by two full bricks of five 40-rd boxes, and one partial brick consisting of two 40-rd boxes boxes of orig Pedersen ammunition manufactured by Remington & marked as caliber 30 auto pistol cartridges. This project was designated “TOP SECRET” and therefore the “Pistol” marking to disguise the fact that the U.S. was preparing to field a semi-automatic rifle. This device simply replaced the bolt in an especially modified Springfield Model 1903 designated the Mark I which then converted a bolt action rifle to semi-automatic, with 40-rd capacity magazine greatly increasing trooper’s fire power & effectiveness on battlefield. Also accompanying is an olive drab canvas bandolier for the three bricks of ammunition & a “1919” dated orig Pedersen canvas pouch which was designed to hold bolt from rifle while device was installed. Additionally accompanying & most rare of all is the orig tin carrying can with brass hanger for web belt. There are also two Pedersen device tools. Consignor states that his father purchased this device, tools, ammunition & accoutrements in 1980 from Alexander Montgomery, a descendant of the well-known Montgomery family for whom Montgomery County, Pennsylvania is named. Along with this package he also purchased a presentation, silver plated Pedersen device magazine that was apparently presented by the manufacturer to the famous inventor of the Pedersen device. This magazine is being sold elsewhere in this auction. CONDITION: Extremely fine. The device is one of the finest ever examined by this cataloguer being in nearly new condition, retaining about 97-98% orig dark gray parkerized finish. Magazine is equally fine retaining most of its orig fine parkerized finish. Carrying can is intact with no rust and retains most of its orig finish w/ a couple of very minor dents. Ammunition & canvas are extremely fine. 4-33811 JR149 (25,000-35,000)
