*SCARCE ENGRAVED CIVILIAN GEW 98 GEWEHRMANS MODEL TARGET MILITARY RIFLE. SN 89027. Cal. 8.15X46 Normal. Beautiful commercial full military Mauser target rifle with 29″ tapered rnd bbl, standard military barleycorn front sight & 2,000 meter ski jump rear sight with elevation markings on both sides of sight base as well as on top of sight base. Caliber marking is over chamber area. Receiver, bolt, trigger guard & floorplate are finished bright with dbl set triggers & exposed top of receiver is beautifully engraved in foliate arabesque patterns. Receiver ring has usual Oberndorf Mauser markings with date “1911”. Mounted in a beautiful, 1-pc, full length birch stock with grasping grooves & semi-pistol grip with bayonet lug, cleaning rod & sling swivels. Buttplate is smooth blued steel. These rifles were made for and sold on civilian market for shooting clubs & individuals for rifle practice & matches. PROVENANCE: Doug Smith Collection. CONDITION: Very fine plus. Bbl & bands retain most of their strong bright orig blue with some light surface mars over chamber area. Receiver, trigger guard & floorplate retain most of their orig bright metal finish. Bolt, a replacement, is polished bright. Stock & handguard are sound with a couple of small grain checks & minor handling & storage marks and retain most of their orig factory finish.
