*EXTRAORDINARILY RARE CASED SET OF COLT SUPER 38 AND ACE SEMI-AUTO PISTOLS PRESENTED TO MAJOR JULIAN S. HATCHER. SN 35 & 36. Cal. 38 Super & 22 LR. Pistols are identical except for caliber. They are both blued finish with 5″ bbls with the 38 Super having fixed sights and the Ace having adjustable rear sight. Both are fitted with full checkered walnut grips and arched mainspring housings and both have checkered triggers and are accompanied by one orig 2-tone magazine in each caliber. Also accompanied by Colt factory letters for each pistol: 1) Colt 38 Super Automatic. Cal. “38”. 5″ bbl, blued finish, type of stocks not listed, shipped to J.S. Hatcher, address unavailable on Feb. 5, 1929. 2) Colt Ace Automatic. Cal. 22. 5″ bbl, blued finish, type of stocks not listed, shipped to “Maj. J.D. Natchez” (sic) on May 21, 1931. The relationship between Natchez and Hatcher is not readily known. This pair of pistols is pictured in their case on p. 440 of The Book of Colt Firearms, Sutherland & Wilson. This may be the only documented cased presentation pair of Colt Automatics known. PROVENANCE: Robert Q. Sutherland Collection. CONDITION: 1) 38 Super. Extremely fine plus. Overall retains 97-98% glossy orig finish with slight muzzle edge wear and faint sharp edge wear with a couple of minor scratches on front strap. Grips show very minor diamond point wear. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore. 2) Ace. Extremely fine. Overall retains 96-97% glossy orig factory blue with light muzzle edge wear and faint sharp edge wear and one small slightly thinned spot on front strap. Grips are crisp with very minor diamond point wear. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore. Case is equally new. 4-39174 (30,000-40,000)
