FINE INSCRIBED CHAROLA SEMI-AUTO PISTOL. SN 1158. Cal. 5 mm Bergmann. Nickel finish with 4″ tapered rnd bbl, fixed integral sights with fixed Mauser-style box magazine in front of trigger guard with detachable floorplate, spring & follower. Bolt cocking knob is reminiscent of the Japanese Nambu with serrated edges. It has a rounded backstrap square butt frame with smooth hard rubber grips and a factory lanyard loop in butt strap. Bbl is marked “I. CHAROLA – EIBAR CAL. 5 m/m”. Sides of frame are lightly engraved with foliate arabesque patterns and a zig zag border completely around frame. Left rear side of frame has a winged bullet trademark similar to the Webley trademark. Trademark is inscribed “Ch. V A.” which stands for “Charola and Anitua”, Spanish Arms manufacturers who produced these pistols as competition for the very similar Bergmann and also for the Model 1896 Broomhandle Mauser. Right rear side of frame is engraved with two large intertwined Olde English initials that appear to be “FF”. These rare little pistols are almost never encountered in the U.S. as with their look alike European cousins, the Bergmann, they were not readily accepted by the U.S. buying public and apparently saw little distribution, even in Europe. CONDITION: Very good to fine. Overall retains about 85% strong orig nickel with most of losses on right side with scattered fine pitting on right side of bbl and slide. Grips are sound showing light wear with some dulling to the orig finish. Mechanics are fine, strong bore with scattered light pitting. 4-39284 JR310 (2,500-4,000)
