SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1842 RIFLED AND SIGHTED MUSKET WITH SLING. Cal. 69. NSN. 42” rnd bbl. Standard Springfield markings on lockplate. Dated 1846 on both lock and bbl tang. Stamped “36” on bbl tang and “93”, an obvious mis-stamp, on buttplate tang. An extra set of inspector initials, probably for the rifling, is stamped at rear of bbl in front of normal proof marks. There is a faint cartouche at rear of left flat on stock. Black sling is unmarked and shows a period repair. CONDITION: Very fine with slight signs of cleaning on bright metal. Stock has been cleaned and there is slight rounding to the edges. Edwards Collection 4-58433 FS129 (1,500-3,000)
