RARE SPECIAL ORDER FRENCH PRESENTATION CAMEO GLASS WATER PITCHER FOR THE YACHT CECELLE.

RARE SPECIAL ORDER FRENCH PRESENTATION CAMEO GLASS WATER PITCHER FOR THE YACHT CECELLE. This unique special order massive cameo pitcher was made for the commissioning of the yacht Cecelle. The bulbous shaped pitcher with cased ruby glass cut to the clear frosted base. The workmanship and design on this pitcher is extraordinary and depicts a busy marine scene which encompasses the entire body of the pitcher. The detail of the work is extraordinary and features on the front a very large image of the ship Cecelle, a steam powered yacht flying its various flags. In the harbor around it are various square masted sailing ships, most of which are in full sail with a detailed sunrise on the horizon. The frosted sky is filled with numerous seagulls and the water on which the ships ride is cut in incredible detail depicting turbulent waves. The underside of the pitcher has a large polished pontil and the handle of the pitcher is of applied clear glass. Much is known about the history of the ship Cecelle, it is not known who did the extraordinary French cameo work, however we do know that it was done in the year 1901-1902 as we know the yacht was christened with the name Cecelle and prior to that it carried another name and we know that the name was later changed in 1904. This yacht made in 1889 and was originally named the Excelsior. Its name was named to Cecelle in 1901 or 1902 and later in 1904 changed to Jeane. (We assume that change in names was a result of change in ownership of the yacht, not a change in wives?).Lloyds Register of British and Foreign Yachts lists the Cecelle as originally being made in 1889 in Rouen France by J. LeClerc, it was originally a 26 ton vessel and was listed as belonging to Paul Barbou in Rouen France in 1901-02. This is truly a unique commission piece and we can find no other example of such a commission piece. Perhaps further research will disclose a relationship between the owner Mr. Barbou and one of the French cameo glass workers. A fabulous piece. SIZE: 12-1/4” t. CONDITION: Generally very good.
