FINE 19TH CENTURY GREEK ICON OF SAINT CHARALAMPOS. Oil on panel mid 19th Century depicting Saint Charalampos who was Bishop under Emperor Septimus Severus (AD 113). Just prior to being beheaded, he cured the Emperor’s daughter, Gallina. His decapitator converted to Christianity and Gallina buried his body. The first church dedicated to Charalampos was built in 1830 in Bebek, one of the wealthy suburbs of Istanbul. PROVENANCE: Estate of Donelson Hoopes. SIZE: 8-1/4” x 6-1/4”. CONDITION: Very good.
