TWO MECHANICAL BANKS: WILLIAM TELL AND ELEPHANT. The William Tell example by J & E Stevens, cast on underside “PATENTED JUNE 23, 1896″, designed by Russell Frisbie. When one places a coin on the barrel of the rifle and presses Tell’s foot, the coin shoots the apple from the boy’s head and falls into the castle bank. The cast-iron elephant mechanical bank, probably by Chein circa 1950, lifts trunk to deposit coin, released by lifting tail. SIZE: William Tell: 10″ overall l. Elephant: 4-1/2″ h. x 5-3/4” l. PROVENANCE: From an East Sangerville, Maine private collection. CONDITION: William Tell bank in working order, retains original painted surfaces, now faded and worn. Elephant bank with traces of original paint on tusks and trunk, otherwise down to metal surface, functions. 9-94945 (300-500)
