*RARE COLLECTOR’S MODEL MBA MARK I MODEL B GYROJET ROCKET PISTOL. SN B074. Cal. 13mm. Cased collector’s edition Gyrojet pistol made of light weight alloy with steel tube bbl, 9-3/4″ x 5-3/4″ high with wood grip panels, engraved through the finish by the factory “MARK I / MODEL B / 13MM GYROJET / SERIAL NO B074”. It has a thumb safety on left rear of frame behind the grip and a slide release on the right rear side of the frame which, when opened, allows the self contained magazine to be loaded from the top. Closing the slide positions a cartridge into the firing position and with the safety in the OFF position allows the front mounted hammer to strike the nose of the projectile which slams it on to a fixed firing pin which ignites the rocket which, with its forward thrust, recocks the hammer and exits the bbl. While Gyrojet projectiles, in theory, were extremely effective with about 1,250 ft/sec velocity and 700 ft lbs of energy, nearly double that of the 45 ACP, and with minimal recoil, never attained reliable accuracy and therefore were never accepted by the buying public or the military and are very rare today. The pistol is in its orig burgundy velvet lined walnut casing with brass plaque in the lid inscribed “MBA / GYROJET ROCKET HANDGUN”. Interior has an oval peg that fits through the trigger guard of the pistol to keep it in display position and also has a 5-1/2″ diameter walnut block which contains 10-rds of 13mm Gyrojet ammunition and a bronze Robert H. Goddard medallion. Also accompanying is a full box of 24-rds of 13mm Gyrojet ammunition of which 18-rds are of one type with a small teat on the nose, 3-rds have a smooth nose and 3-rds have a softpoint nose, all in their orig shipping box with an orig invoice dated 21 Dec 65 with shipping document dated 12 Jan 1966. Cost was $24.30. Additionally accompanied by a certificate of authentication for the purchase of this pistol identified by SN as being one of the first 1,000 handguns ever made and is dated 11 Nov 1965. Additionally accompanying is three pages from MBA Associates to the customer with operating instructions. Also accompanying are four bi-fold pamphlets advertising the Gyrojet Rocket handgun. And finally accompanying is a spiral bound soft cover book titled Gyrojet Rocket Small Arms Technology, by MBA Associates Staff, copyrighted 1965. CONDITION: Pistol has been fired but appears new retaining about all of its orig finish. Grips are equally new. Case, ammunition and other accessories accompanying are also fine. Spiral bound booklet is slightly yellowed with light damaged to the plastic spiral binding. 4-40930 JR253 (4,000-7,000)
