J.N. GARDNER HEAVY PERCUSSION TARGET RIFLE. Cal 40. Fine early percussion target rifle with 31” oct bbl, 1-1/8” across the flats, small German silver front sight and fine flat top open rear sight. It is complete with its original false muzzle and steel & brass bullet starter. It is made without forestock using a Remington bbl which is marked on the lower left flat. The makers name and “Scranton, PA” is marked on the top right flat by the rear sight. The buttstock is very nicely grained walnut made in early Schutzen style with light Schutzen cheek piece and German silver Schutzen trigger guard. It has a medium weight nickeled brass or German silver Schutzen buttplate. The back action lockplate is unmarked and it is fitted with a beautifully detailed dogs head hammer. The nipple bolster is shielded with a clean out screw. The lockplate, hammer, and top tang are lightly engraved in beautiful arabesque patterns. The top flat of the bbl has 2 drilled and tapped holes in back of the front sight and an extra dovetail in back of the rear sight, apparently where a full-length scope was mounted at one time. The adjusting base remains in the top tang in the tang sight screw hole. The ramrod is missing. Accompanied by reproduced pages from The Muzzle-Loading Cap Lock Rifle by Ned H. Roberts wherein this maker is mentioned as having made fine rifles. CONDITION: Fine. Bbl retains a medium smooth brown patina with small hammer marks on both side flats. Lockplate, hammer, and top tang are silvered case colors. Nipple area is moderately pitted. Stock has a repaired crack in the wrist. Otherwise is sound and retains most of a fine refinish. 4-50334 JR151 (2,000-3,000)
