*EXTRAORDINARILY RARE CASED DEEP RELIEF ENGRAVED GOLD PLATED WALTHER PP SEMI-AUTO PISTOL. SN 972851. Cal. 7.65 mm (32 ACP). Extremely beautiful Walther PP in usual configuration with 4″ bbl, fixed sights & fitted with extremely beautiful carved & stained ivory grips with oak leaf & acorn patterns at top & bottom leaving an oval central panel on each grip. Left grip has applied gold initials “VL” believed to stand for Victor Lutz. Right grip has a raised gold Walther banner. Entire pistol has full coverage deep relief oak leaf & acorn pattern engraving with fine stippled background. Left side of slide is also relief engraved in a 2-line ribbon “Ehrengabe der Waffenfabrik Walther / Zella Mehlis / Th”. Right side of slide is also deep relief engraved in a single narrow panel “S.A. – Pistolenschiessen 1937.” This pistol is so extensively engraved that the serial number would have been obliterated, so in order to accommodate the “full coverage” engraving the serial number was relocated to the bottom right edge of the grip frame, under the grip. Accompanied by its orig Walther brown leatherette covered, green velvet lined presentation case, French fitted in bottom for pistol, a spare white plastic bottom finger-rest magazine, three orig nickel plated cartridges & its orig steel cleaning rod. Inside lid has the Walther banner and “PP” embossed in gold. Victor Lutz was born in 1890, joined the Army in 1912 and fought through WWI. After the war he joined the National Socialist German Workers Party (NSDAP). After Ernst Roehm was assassinated in 1933, Mr. Lutz became the head of the SA which position he held until his death in a car crash in 1943. During that time he was also president of Hanover, Germany. The inscription on right side of slide roughly translates to “SA Pistol Shoot 1937”, obviously a serious competition to warrant such a magnificent prize. Since Victor Lutz was the head of the SA at that time it almost certain that the “VL” initials on left grip are his alone. This is certainly one of the most magnificent Walthers to come to market in recent memory, possibly the finest extant. PROVENANCE: Doug Smith Collection. CONDITION: Extraordinarily fine. Overall retains virtually all of its orig gold plated finish with bright silver edges showing through and some minor spotting on sharp edges. Grips are equally new with a lovely ivory patina. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore, appears unfired. Case is extremely fine with a couple of minor breaks in brown leatherette covering. Interior is moderately faded but completely intact. A truly magnificent presentation piece of museum quality. 4-36124 JR246 (60,000-75,000)
