INTERESTING FOLK ART BIRCH BARK COLLAGE BY EDWARD W. MERRILL, CONCORD, NH. The collage has a number of black figures which are comprised of birch bark clothing and pencil drawn heads and hands. There are some white watercolor highlights and the scene depicts a stage setting with audience. Title on the bottom margin “The Blackville Debating Society – “Wedder-Lord Dorwin Involved Hisself Or Somebody Else” The Scorner In The Corner Will Reply”. Against the back wall is a sign “No Contemptible Lauqig Allowed in the DeBaite”. This is all on a black paper background with white highlights. Signed center middle “E. W. Merrill Concord, NH”. Attached to back is a copy of an article concerning this artist. Article indicates that he worked from 1875 to the early 1900’s. Housed in an Eastlake type ebonized and gilt trim frame.
