SCARCE HAPGOOD HEAVY FLINTLOCK TARGET RIFLE.

SCARCE HAPGOOD HEAVY FLINTLOCK TARGET RIFLE. Cal 62. Beautiful, deluxe, heavy, target rifle with massive 40” bbl, 1-5/16” across the flats with tiny pierced German silver front sight and a flat top open rear sight with the makers name in an engraved oval in the chamber area. It is mounted in a heavy, nicely grained, American walnut, half stock with horn tip and two wedges through rectangular silver escutcheons. It has brass furniture with a wooden rib on the bottom of the bbl and two rod guides with a lightly engraved nose pipe. It has a decorative, faceted fancy trigger guard and faceted tang crescent buttplate with a 5” engraved toeplate. It has a beautiful 4-pc engraved patchbox with ball and floral finial. The lockplate is marked “Warranted” and has a roller frizzen with sculpted pan and a stepped rounded back edge with light engraving. The wrist is checkered and it has a small square silver thumbplate. The cheek piece on the left side is inlaid with a fancy engraved modified silver oval that has a bird and flowers in the center. The top tang is engraved with flower and leaf patterns. Accompanied by reproduced articles (I & II) that appeared in the July & August 1976 Gun Report, by Willard C. Cousins. These articles detail the life and times of Joab Hapgood, 1804-1890 who was a gun maker in the Boston area, who was the maker of this rifle. CONDITION: Very fine to extremely fine. Bbl retains a fine smooth medium silver brown patina with a couple of dings on the sharp edges and a wrench mark on the breech. Horn tip has a bug bite. Stock has a couple of hairlines through the lockplate screw escutcheon, is missing a couple of small chips by the lockplate and a long sliver from the left bbl channel. Otherwise is very fine and retains most of a fine old refinish. Bright shiny bore with minor pitting. An extremely fine, high grade and rare, deluxe, heavy, target rifle. 4-50336 JR150 (6,000-10,000)
