BAROQUE REVIVAL GERMAN OAK TALL-CASE CLOCK. 1st quarter 20th century. This fine hand carved example of quartersawn oak, fitted with chain-driven brass 8-day movement, stamped on the backplate with the mark of “GUSTAV BECKER FREIBURG” / “IN SCHL.” centering a crown with anchor flanked by the letters “G” and “B”. Backplate additionally stamped “D. R. P. / No. 171659” with additional serial number below “1906910”. Time and strike mechanisms with original filigree-decorated brass-clad weights, pendulum similarly decorated and wrapped in brass, square dial with Arabic numeral chapter ring, decorated overall with ornate chased scrolling foliate vinery and mythological figures. Hammer striking on a cast-brass and steel coil mounted to back of case. Bonnet with pagoda cornice, frieze applied with carved symbol of “tempus fugit” above a square glass door. Bonnet is mounted to the open case in which is displayed the weights and pendulum, carved overall with scrolling vinery, the corners carved with grotesque masks supported by robed caryatids, the base carved with molded, recessed and raised panels, flanked by engaged Ionic half-columns, all on a molded plinth. SIZE: 92-1/2″ h. x 25″ overall w. x 13-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: Wedding gift to the Pietmeyer family, transported to this country after World War I and purchased from the family of the current owner. CONDITION: Very good condition overall, retaining original finish with dark patina. Movement, dial, pendulum and weights also original. Bracket or suppressed ball feet now absent. Two holes for dowels above the bonnet cornice signify the presence of an additional pediment, now absent. 9-95430 (3,000-5,000)
