*RARE U.S. PROPERTY WINCHESTER MODEL 94 SADDLE RING CARBINE.

*RARE U.S. PROPERTY WINCHESTER MODEL 94 SADDLE RING CARBINE. Cal. 30 WCF (30-30). SN 1028659. Standard grade carbine with 20” rnd bbl, full magazine, square base front sight and 2,000 yard carbine ladder rear sight. There is a stud & ring in left side of receiver. Mounted with very highly figured, uncheckered, American walnut with straight stock & carbine buttplate. Top of receiver is marked “U.S.” to the left of the proofmark and an Ordnance Corps flaming bomb to right of proofmark. This carbine is similar to the so-called “Spruce” guns of WWI era, 1,800 of which were issued to U.S. troops in Washington & Oregon states guarding the lumber industry harvesting the Sitka spruce for the aircraft industry. This carbine was not manufactured until 1928, therefore, while similar in configuration, is not a Spruce gun, but simply a military inspected carbine. Accompanying this carbine is a 6-page article, apparently from an issue of Gun Report, regarding the Spruce guns, which lists this specific carbine and indicates that it is an “Arizona gun”, no indication what this means. The article also has a close-up photograph of the receiver ring of one of the Spruce guns which shows the “US” without periods. Our example has periods. Additionally accompanying is a copy of p. 442 from a printing of The Winchester Book, Madis, which has reprints of two letters from Winchester to their salesman in the WWI era, instructing them to solicit sales of commercial rifles and shotguns to local home guard units. CONDITION: Very fine plus. Bbl & magazine tube retain virtually all of their orig factory finish with some slight thinning on magazine tube. Receiver retains 85-88% glossy orig blue with the loss areas flaked, not worn, to a medium patina. There are a series of light scratches on bottom right edge. Wood is sound with a few light handling & use marks and retains about all of its orig factory finish. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore. 4-30653 JR315 (3,000-5,000)
