*RARE ENGRAVED GOLD PLATED J.P. SAUER PRESENTATION/EXHIBITION QUALITY MODEL 38 SEMI-AUTO PISTOL. SN NONE VISIBLE. Cal. 32 ACP. Spectacular Sauer & Son pocket pistol with 3-1/4″ bbl, fixed sights and 2-pc black composition grips with the Sauer & Son logo on left side. Pistol is spectacularly deep relief engraved in thistle patterns with very fine stippled background over the full surface of the slide & frame with only artistically offsetting unengraved borders. Left side of slide has “SUHL-GERMANY” in raised block letters as part of the engraving patterns. Left side of trigger guard has two small notches, the purpose of which are unknown to this cataloger. These notches were apparently part of manufacturing process as they have gold plating in the cuts. Pistol is then gold plated, probably over silver plating with a full gold plated magazine. This level & quality of such high end engraving was only created for very high officials, usually as presentation pieces. Accompanied by a German birch hinged lid wooden box with milled recesses in bottom for pistol and a spare magazine, which is missing. It is apparent that the pistol was never meant to reside in this box, that it was only to be used for transportation to the presentation. Bottom of box is bevel edged and inscribed in pencil “William R. McKain / Btry. “D” 126th AAA Geenf– / ASM33693533″. The inscription is apparently by the American soldier who captured or liberated this pistol. CONDITION: Pistol appears to be new & unfired. Overall it retains about 99% plus orig gold plating. Grips are crisp with a small bruise & nick on left side and a few worn diamonds, probably from the box, on right side. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore, probably unfired. 4-40585 JR57 (4,000-6,000)
