It has a smooth steel buttplate with trap containing a 3-pc iron cleaning rod and an orig nickeled oiler. The stock has had the 1892 ramrod channel in the forearm filled and the bolt the 1896 modifications. Accompanied by a Springfield research service letter identifying this rifle as having been issued to Pvt. Peter Doherty of Company B, 13th Infantry Regiment, just prior to the Spanish American War. Pvt. Doherty enlisted at Fort Sill, Indian Territory, October 25, 1891, promoted to Sgt. in 1896, re-enlisted in October 1896, reduced in rank 1897 and transferred to Company A, 13th Infantry in May 1898. The letter goes on to state that rifles issued to a company stayed with the company when the orig member to whom it was issued leaves the company for any reason. Therefore since Company B of the 13th Infantry took part in the assault on Fort San Juan which culminated in the now famous “Charge up San Juan Hill” on July 1, 1898, that this rifle undoubtedly participated in that action. This information is found in the order book for Company L, 20th Kansas Volunteer Infantry which apparently succeeded Company B, 13th Infantry in the Philippines or both companies used the same book to record issues of arms & equipment which also leads to speculation that this rifle also saw action in the Philippines. CONDITION: Fine. Bbl retains a smooth even orig blue turning plum. Front band retains about 60% orig blue and the middle band about 80% thin orig blue. Receiver and sideplate are silvered mottled case colors and the cartridge box about 75% dark blue/brown patina. Wood is sound with a fine dark smooth oiled patina.
