UNKNOWN (American, Mid-19th Century) MINIATURE PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN. Fine watercolor side view of a man with black hair wearing a black coat and black tie. Oval painted on a black painted border. Back in old pen script “This was taken June 1840”. Housed in a period gold molded wood frame. There is interesting brown to blue coloring around the portrait. In modern pen on paper backing to the frame indicates that the sitter is Jos. L. Elliott of Phila. with other family names. It also says “Believed to be done by “Day” of Phila”. Possibly the work of either Augustus Day or Charles William Day. PROVENANCE: Thulin Estate, Hamden, Maine. SIGHT SIZE: 3” x 2-1/2”. CONDITION: Very good. 9-29899 (400-800)
