*RARE CHINESE TAKU NAVAL ARSENAL TYPE II COPY OF A BROOMHANDLE C96 SEMI-AUTO PISTOL. SN 531. Cal. 30 Mauser. Blue finish with 5-1/2″ tapered rnd bbl, integral barleycorn front sight and 1,000 meter tangent rear sight, all similar to the Mauser C96 pistol from which it was copied. This pistol is generally dimensionally identical to a Mauser with large ring hammer and serrated bag shaped wood grip panels numbered to this revolver. It also has a Mauser style lanyard stud in butt strap. The frame is similar to a flat side Mauser without milled cutouts and with sharp angled milled cutouts around magazine box. Internally it is identical to the Mauser C96 but with somewhat rough machine & file marks over most of the parts. All visible parts internally are matching numbered to the pistol. Another subtle difference is that the extractor, firing pin retainer and sight elevation slide are not fire blued as in the Mausers but normal dark blue. The only visible part not numbered is the follower spring. Rifling is 4 lands & grooves with right hand twist. Top of the bolt is stamped with a small Chinese character, otherwise the pistol is completely unmarked except for SNs. Credit is given to Dr. Leonardo M. Antaris for identifying this pistol and for providing the above information that will appear in an article soon to be published. In the article Dr. Antaris states that the Taku Naval Yard began manufacturing arms in 1891 and by 1917 was making copies of several European machine guns. In about 1925 they began producing Mauser C96 type pistols with the Type I that had a milled panel frame produced between 1925-1928, numbering about 1,000 pieces. In the period 1928-1933 they produced the Type II which is the subject pistol in this description which numbered about 3,500 pieces. CONDITION: Fine. Overall retains about 90% strong, dull, orig arsenal blue with some minor machine marks on both sides of frame. Grips are sound and retain about 85% strong orig varnish. Mechanics are fine, strong bright bore with some light scattered pitting. 4-40573 JR81 (2,000-3,000)
