VERY RARE SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1851 CADET MUSKET WITH BAYONET. Cal. 54. NSN. 40” rnd bbl. Marked “SPRING / FIELD / 1851” vertically at rear of lock with American eagle over “US” in front of hammer. Bbl is dated 1851 also, possibly making this one of the 300 ordered by President Zachary Taylor for the cadets at Virginia Military Institute. The 15” triangular bayonet has a concave upper surface marked “US” at the rear. CONDITION: Brown/gray patina overall with light pitting except at breech which has heavy pitting, and on buttplate and trigger guard, which have moderate pitting. Wood is cracked at rear lockplate screw. A cartouche is visible on left side of stock but not readable. Mechanically fine. Bayonet has scattered light pitting with spots of surface rust.
