ANTHONY THIEME (American, 1888-1954) “NEW CASTLE, DELAWARE, 1938”. Outstanding large oil on canvas street scene shows a church behind a stucco wall with colorful trees under a blue and white cloud sky. Five figures can be seen on the road and a small lawn and tree area with other homes. A break between the wall and the house, shows water with a sailboat having land beyond. The light cascades from the right casting shadows in the foreground and across the scene. Signed lower right. Housed in its original gilt carved wood frame. On reverse of canvas is a pencil title and date and also “NO 6″. We believe this to be the Immanuel Episcopal Church in New Castle, Delaware which is located 6 miles south of Wilmington, DE. First time offered, never has been out of the family that originally purchased it from the artist. SIZE: 30″ x 36”. PROVENANCE: Wellesley, MA Estate through family descent.
