*RARE & UNUSUAL T.A. FIDJELAND MODEL 18 SEMI-AUTO PISTOL. SN NONE VISIBLE. Cal. 9 mm. Bright metal finish with 5-3/4″ bbl, fixed sights with slide/bbl shroud similar to Spanish-made Astra pistols. Left side of slide is hand stamped “T.A. FIDJELAND. MODEL. NO 18.”. This pistol is overall 8-1/4″ long x 5″ high with a very straight, rounded grip that has gutta-percha checkered panels in each side with left one having a cartridge counter window. Bottom left of grip has an integral lanyard loop with magazine release in heel. Trigger is Colt 1911 style with a Colt 1905 type grip safety. It also has a small European style swinging thumb safety on top left rear side of frame. The hammer is rounded and partially concealed in back of slide and completely inaccessible for manually cocking. Left side of frame, at top of grip, has a rather crude slide lock that may have been a prototype or experimental feature of this pistol. Rear sight is threaded into a pedestal at top of slide and locks into a slot in a knurled ring. Removing rear sight apparently releases firing pin for removal. Firing pin is broken at this point with loose piece accompanying the pistol. Also accompanying are twelve pages, six of which appear to be copies of a book, written in Norwegian, about this pistol maker/inventor, and the other six pages are copies of an American patent, in English, which was filed Oct. 22, 1908 and granted May 4, 1909 to Terje Aanensen Fidjeland of Norway for a magazine self-loading pistol. CONDITION: Good to very good. Finish is currently bright metal and appears to have been polished but may have been nickel plated at one time before being cleaned. Grip panels are sound with a couple of minor dings & scratches with strong checkering. Mechanics are fine, strong bore with fine pitting. Firing pin is broken and magazine is missing. 4-39554 JR56 (2,000-5,000)
