SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1851 RIFLED AND SIGHTED CADET MUSKET WITH BAYONET. Cal. 58. NSN. 40” rnd bbl. Marked “SPRING / FIELD / 1852” vertically at rear of lockplate. Dated 1853 on bbl tang. No cartouche is visible on stock. The number “248” has been stamped on top of rear bbl band and “B / 51” on buttplate. 15” triangular bayonet with concave upper surface marked “US” at base of blade. About 4,000 of these were made, 2,840 of them in 1852, and 1,160 in 1853. CONDITION: Gray patina with light pitting except on buttplate, which has heavier pitting. Wood has numerous nicks and gouges and has been sanded, slightly undersized. Mechanically good. Edwards Collection 4-58439 (1,000-2,000)
