*EDDYSTONE 1917 PRESENTATION RIFLE. Cal. 30-06. SN 1292607. 26” bbl dated “11-18”. This Eddystone 1917 rifle was presented to the Honorable John Skelton Williams & an oval presentation plaque, approx. 3-3/4” x 1-3/4” is mounted flush into right side of stock & it reads “Honorable John Skelton Williams”. John Williams was born July 6, 1865 in Powhatan County, Virginia. Coming from a well to do family, he was put through private schools & became an investment banker in mid-1890’s. In 1895 he was first President of The Seaboard Airline Railway. In December 1903 he was forced out of his presidency of the company by a group of New York bankers. That left him quite bitter. In March 1913 Williams was appointed Asst. Secretary of Treasury by Pres. Wilson at request of Secretary McAdoo. In January 1914 he was named Comptroller of Currency. As Comptroller of Currency he was a member of the organizing committee which set up the new Federal Reserve System. He also served as a member of Interstate Commerce Commission Advisory Board on valuation. When McAdoo resigned office in 1917, Williams became Director of Finances & Purchases, a position that he held until March of 1919. On March 2, 1921 with the accession of a hostile Republican administration, he resigned. Retiring from public life, Williams returned to the Richmond Trust Company serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors until his sudden death in 1926. Gun was purchased by Leonard K. Booth of Disputanta, VA in Nov. 1987 from a Skelton estate. CONDITION: Receiver retains 98% of its orig finish with prominent wear being where extractor rubs down side rail of receiver. Bolt is 90% condition. Rear sight assembly, which is “E” marked is in 98% condition. Bolt removal lever is in 90% condition with some surface rust, as is the safety. Bbl has 95% orig Parkerizing with one slight rub mark down right side of bbl & front sight assembly is 98% condition. Front bbl band & stacking swivel assembly which is “E” marked is in 99% condition. Middle bbl band assembly is also in 99% condition. Buttplate assembly is in 85% condition with some surface rust, particularly on edges. Buttstock, which appears to be curly maple, is in excellent plus condition with only slightest of rub marks & one slight chip in right hand side, just above floorplate. Front & rear hand guards are both “E” marked & in excellent condition with only slight scuffing throughout. Trigger guard assembly is in 96% condition with some slight corrosion around trigger guard itself & one small scratch at bottom of trigger guard. Floorplate assembly shows nearly new. Bore shows what appears to be a fair amount of surface rust on inside which may or may not clean but rifling is sharp & crisp. 4-57837 BK61 (2,500-5,000)
