*RARE 1917 FRENCH TRANSITIONAL SEMI AUTOMATIC RIFLE. SN 26969. Cal. 8mm Lebel. 31″ bbl. Model 1917, Manufacture d’Armes, marked “MA”. Includes orig leather sling with, brass keeper disks. Extremely fine example of unusual French Transitional Semi Auto rifle dated October 1917. Action operates smoothly when cycled by hand and appears fully functional. This firearm appears to have been made from standard service rifle parts, stock is inlet for orig rifle bbl band and shows evidence of gouges having been filled in. Makers mark “MA” and “N” on the receiver and barrel. Bbl indexed to receiver. Stock also includes maker’s cartouche “MA” and “October 1917”. SN matched on stock, charging handle, and bbl. Safety retaining plate SN does not appear to match rest of gun. Orig and unusual mag retaining latch. CONDITION: 1920’s arsenal refinish is very fine to excellent, with the exception of the trigger guard and trigger assembly which is the white with some flecks of surface rust. Mag cover shows evidence of refinishing with buff marks and copper filling on each side, about an inch. Leather sling is stiff with green verdigris starting along the keeper disks, but still very serviceable. Bore is shiny and bright, and bolt face is excellent.
